Competing with Santa

Seriously... he's everywhere. I have nothing against families that follow the Santa tradition. I grew up eagerly waiting for Santa's visit, and I still love the Lord and know the true meaning of Christmas. And honestly as a family, we haven't even decided how we are handling it Santa. All I know is we haven't watched any movies with Santa or have Santas in the house, except for one that one of my students hand sewn for me. But like I said, he's everywhere. Tonight we were looking at the manger scene, that David can touch (thanks Jen) and I was asking David who each character was. He got the wise man, Mary, baby Jesus, and then when I held up Joseph... you guessed it... Santa! He wasn't teasing and was confused!

Please help me Lord to teach a two year old about God incarnate, the embodiment of grace, the greatest gift, our source of joy, Jesus Christ Savior of the world!

We have taken Abbie to see Santa every year, but have been careful not to tell her anything about Santa bringing presents. In fact, I have flat out told her that he's not real. The other day I picked her up at school and the kids were all talking about Santa. As we were walking out, I told her: "Santa's not real." Felt a little badly about that as there were some other kids around. Oh well. I'm not about to lie to my kid. Don't worry though, he may have gotten the names confused, but it's just a name. You are doing a great job teaching him the real meaning of Christmas and he's getting it, even if he did mix up the names.

We have decided to tell our kids the story of where the tradition of Santa came from and in that tradition give them a gift from him. But we don't exchange gifts among our immediate family. We make a birthday cake for Jesus and sing happy birthday. Then we focus on giving to others.
